The Hipp Story
Hippstory/Hipp! is design objects with a graphic expression made out of unexpected materials. Our products are designed by Julia Nielsen, cut in a small workshop i Germany then hand assembled in our Stockholm Gröndal studio. Jewellery is our principal passion, but we also have a range of other desirable objects that we sell alongside the jewellery. Our favourite material is Swedish birchwood veneer, which is pressed from FSC-approved wood in an island on the east coast of Sweden.
The Hipp Story began in London’s Spitalfields market in 2003, where Julia was selling earrings cut from leftover scraps of leather. It has since taken us all over the place. We’ve live in London, Stuttgart and Stockholm. We’ve exhibited in trade fairs in Paris, Frankfurt, London and Stockholm. In Maison et Objet in Paris we won an award for best new products in 2014. We’ve sold in 200 different shops in five continents. We’ve worked out of various types of studios and shops, 2013-16 we ran the Hipp! shop in Stockholm’s Soho which was praised by New York Times, Condé Nast Traveller and Vouge France. We are proud to count Tate Modern, Liberty, MoMa and Liljevalchs in Stockholm among our customers.
When we closed for maternity leave 2016–2017 we had the opportunity to take a step back and evaluate the first fourteen years of Hipp! which had flown past. We asked ourselves how we wanted Hippstory to develop and how we wanted to work over the next forty years. And the answer was that we wanted to focus more on design. It meant not being an employer and not running a shop. It meant being more visible online instead and outsourcing more of the production. Another thing we wanted to do is give something back to the product design community and the next generation of product designers, so alongside Hippstory we are working on an exciting longterm project to build an incubator for product design in Stockholm!
Welcome to Hippstory! We are a small family business. We have fun designing products and we want to delight our customers.
