I'm Charlotte King, founder of ShoeLicks, Brixton based company transforming your high street heels into a pair Monsieur Louboutins.
I'm an actress and set up ShoeLicks to fulfil my other passion for design for when I'm not treading the boards. I started the company 2 years ago and run everything myself (even though I have a tendency to use the royal ‘we') and have been going from strength to strength each month. ShoeLicks is now being stocked in over 150 retailers with the V&A, Design Museum and Fenwick of Bond St being some of our top stockists that we're selling incredibly well with, so much so, we've just launched an exclusive collection with the V&A!
I came up with the idea when I was on tour with Peppa Pig, I loved Louboutin's iconic red sole, but would never want to spend £450 on a pair of designer heels that I probably couldn't walk in anyway. I felt it wasn't fair that young ladies on a budget couldn't get fun soles that made their outfit pop, so I went about coming up with a strong concept for the brand and worked out a one-size-fits-all designer sticker with dimensions that cannot be bought individually online and got designing my first collection of 6. We now have a total of 32 designs.
Design ideas tend to come from the latest trends of print and colour eg. Chevron, geometric monochrome, last year mint and lilac were very much the colours of S/S. Right now, we've got holographic and metallic gold heating up the streets donned on heels and Chelsea boots (which you can also use ShoeLicks on). My mother always used to make scarves out of Liberty material and even bought her wedding dress from Liberty, so I have always loved their prints and intricate patterns and florals especially, so have tried to let that inspire me on a few designs.
Right now, I think bold block colours and 90s prints are hot, so we've got a Back to the 90s Collection out, to channel your inner Fresh Prince. One of our latest designs is a sultry Lush Lace design which will always be a staple in anyone's wardrobe.
This will be my third time at Pulse's Launchpad; my first Pulse called me this summer's best sellers, and we met so many important buyers and independent retailers that love the product. This year, I'm even more excited, as there's a lot of buzz around the company after the exposure that Dragons' Den and our article in the Mail Online has given ShoeLicks; I'm hoping to meet more high street retailer buyers that are interested in fashion, gifts and cards, as they're perfect to pop a couple in with a card for the ultimate unique gift.
